Cape Town, South Africa :: Logos Hope sails into her next port

A look into life at sea

Ships :: Ever wondered what happens during the sailing from port to port?

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to sail with OM’s ships?

Logos Hope’s 350 crewmembers recently embarked upon the voyage of a lifetime – a 12-day journey across the Atlantic Ocean, traveling all the way from the continent of Africa to the Caribbean.

But despite the absence of dry land, where most of our interaction takes place, the ship’s greater purpose always remains.

As you venture with us across the open ocean, you’ll experience the balance of hard work, community, fun and exciting new discoveries. And don’t miss the beautiful nature sights that you may only get to see once in your life!

The floating bookfair

Behind the scenes of the ‘world’s largest floating bookfair,’ volunteers work hard to prepare for the first port in the Caribbean since 2021. Though the doors weren’t open, the heart to connect with people through literature remains. When moving to the Caribbean, books specific to the culture were placed that our future visitors could directly relate to.

For shift leader Rishit (India), transforming and preparing the bookfair for new regions helps him feel more connected to the upcoming port. He shared, “Sailing makes me feel excited… Whenever we leave a port, of course we are a bit sad. But at the same time, we are so excited to meet new people, to get to know them and their stories.”

East to west

With no visitors on board, crewmembers have extra space to bond and focus on growing their personal faith. To make use of this time, Logos Hope leadership planned a special programme for crewmembers.

Crossing the Atlantic Ocean, the theme was “East to West,” symbolising not only the ship’s movement, but also inspiring a deeper spiritual message from Psalm 103. Ron (South Africa), head of People Development, described the intent behind the programme. “The idea behind it is for people to get rest, but also be intentional… and focus on spending time with God.”

Like crewmember Shekina (India), you wouldn’t want to miss this opportunity to hear what God is saying to you. “I spent time outside every day. Looking at the vastness, it reminded me of how big God is and how much He thought of this world in all these minute, tiny details – He is so creative. I really love to paint, so it stood out to me that God has such an artistic palate,” she expressed.

Alongside spiritual encouragement, there are always times for fun and socialising when at sea. Whether it’s ship-wide football tournaments, movie nights or special meals, you will share memorable moments during every voyage.

Excitement awaits

Dolphins swimming alongside the vessel serve as a reminder that, even with no land in sight, Logos Hope is never alone. Painted skies at sunrise and sunset look unbelievable reflecting over the water. At night, the milky way can be seen amongst the thousands of stars – if you pay attention, you might even spot a shooting star!

But even this doesn’t compare to the feeling of seeing new land for the first time. “To come upon land and arrive at a new port is always an excitement,” says deck volunteer Samuel (France).

This excitement is especially heightened entering a new region of the world. As our journey continues to unfold in the Caribbean, we invite you to consider what it would be like to sail with us from shore to shore, click here to join us and experience for yourself God’s beautiful creation, close community, and what it is like to be a part of sharing knowledge, help and hope around the world with OM’s ships.
